Despite the alcohol content, drinking wine has long been associated and recommended to have various benefits to your overall health when it is consumed in moderation. However, a lot of wine drinkers aren’t aware of the health benefits of organic wine when it is being directly compared to conventional wine.
By law, wine bottle labels are required to indicate the alcohol strength and the country the wine originated in. They don't have to list any chemicals, preservatives or additives that they might contain. As a result - many devoted wine drinkers wouldn’t be able to tell you what was in their favourite glass!
For the health conscious wine drinker, the key to avoiding these harsh and nasty chemicals is to switch to organic wine which also happens to be healthier! If you want to avoid consuming lots of harmful artificial additives, organic wine is the way to go. Here are some reasons why you should consider drinking organic wine instead of the usual conventional stuff.
Organic Grapes
These grapes are grown in an environment where they aren’t exposed to harmful chemical pesticides, fertilisers or herbicides. As a direct result, organic wine is much more natural and cleaner to consume. Conventional winemakers spray their grapes and vines with these chemicals to try and kill off unwanted weeds and insects which attack the grapes. The residue from these chemicals can be left on the grapes and then end up in the finished wine or in the surrounding soil and river systems.
In order to grow organic grapes, a vineyard has to follow strict and completely different agricultural practices - they have to maintain the health and overall condition of their vines using more natural methods.
Fewer Sulphites
Sulphites are regularly used in conventional winemaking as a preservative. Generally, it is fairly harmless to consume sulphites unless you suffer from severe asthma, or if your body lacks the particular enzyme you need to break down the sulphites in your body. Some wine drinkers can experience an allergic reaction to sulphites in their wine, such as, a rash, cramps, hives and blotchy skin.
Less Added Sugar
This is a huge criticism of traditional supermarket wine, they have a high amount of added sugar. Any of the perceived sweetness of wine can come from sugars, either the naturally occuring kind or those that have been artificially added. The amount of sugar in the wine, natural or artificial, will determine the final alcohol content of the wine. Sugar can also be added as a way for winemakers to hide imperfections in the taste, which occur when poor quality grapes are used.
Fewer Additives
Organic wines are free of additives such as; refined sugar, sulphuric acids and fining and clarification agents. The organic winemaking process avoids the use of chemicals and heavily promotes biodiversity. The use of chemicals can actually spoil the PH balance in the soil, kill environmentally beneficial weeds and insects and can even pollute groundwater or local water supplies.
