3 ways to keep your workspace clutter free

It’s fantastic that as a workforce, we’re collectively making an effort to improve our mindfulness and reduce the many stresses that a 9-5 can cause. It’s all well and good taking ten minutes during your lunch break to meditate in the fresh air, but this will all be for naught if you’re returning to a gloomy and cluttered workspace that will feel oppressive and manic.

Think about your workspace right now and what state it might be in. Is it a clear and clean area conducive to having great focus and meeting deadlines, or could it really do with a spruce up to make sitting at it much more pleasant?

Maintaining order at your desk goes a long way to achieving a sense of calm in a busy environment, and you’ll undoubtedly feel more productive. Here are a few changes to implement!

1. Purge

The first thing to do is rid yourself of any clutter that will be the biggest contributor to your stress. If you haven’t use it in six months, get rid. If you use something but very sparingly, put it away in your locker or office cabinet so that you only have it on your desk when it’s in use. If you enjoy surrounding yourself with personal mementoes, try to limit these to one or two.

2. Take stock

Keeping things organised is so often overlooked, but can make such a great change to your outlook in the office. Developing a system for getting stationary and work tools in check can help minimise stress. Purchase a desk tidy or use a pencil case, and keep them either to the edge of your desk and out of the way or in a drawer.

If you’re in a line of work where you constantly have sheaves of paper about, consider scanning them and storing them digitally on your computer. Anything you need to hand, keep it all in a box file and out of the way. Stationery supplies are becoming increasingly innovative, so rather than use a notebook for one thing and a diary for another, look for books which are multipurpose to avoid keeping several on the go and in your way.

3. Eating out

Too many of us feel the pressure of a busy environment at work, and rather than take a break that’ll restore your mind halfway through the day, we eat at our desks to get things done. Not only will the compromise our wellbeing, eating lunch at our desks creates a breeding ground for bacteria. Computer keyboards accumulate grime really easily, and it’s difficult to avoid getting crumbs all over the floor. Take some time away from your workspace, and enjoy a meal that you don’t need to worry about scrupulously cleaning away afterwards.

These are three really easy changes to implement to ensure a clean and clutter-free desk, but need to be repeated frequently or maintained for continued working harmony. Before leaving the office each day, do a quick scan of your desk and see to anything that needs clearing away or cleaning. Every month you need to do a deep clean, too. Get everything off the desk and use antibacterial spray and a cloth for surfaces to get it sparkling.

Consider hiring cleaners Llandudno to help too to give your entire office a refresh after a long week.

Give all this a go, and we’re sure you’ll be feeling more productive and relaxed in no time!
